Most strut replacements take 2–3 hours per axle. Complete strut assembly replacements (spring and strut together) are faster — 1.5–2 hours per axle — and the better investment if your springs are original and the vehicle has 80,000+ miles.
A clunking noise over bumps is usually the first sign of a worn ball joint or control arm bushing. A wandering steering feel that gets worse on the freeway often points to loose control arm bushings or worn tie rod ends. These components are load-bearing — a ball joint failure at highway speed is a catastrophic safety event, not a maintenance inconvenience. If you hear clunking from the front of your vehicle, get it inspected before the next road trip.

Chevrolet SPECIFICS
Chevrolet Silverado, Colorado, Equinox, and Malibu are among the most common vehicles we service across the San Antonio metro. The 5.3L EcoTec3 and 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engines in Silverado and Suburban are robust, but the Active Fuel Management (AFM) / Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) cylinder deactivation systems are the source of the highest-frequency failure mode: AFM lifter collapse. GM vehicles require Dexos1 Gen 3 certified oil (the new 2021+ spec) on 2021+ models, and Dexos1 Gen 2 on 2011–2020 models. Non-certified oil voids the powertrain warranty and can accelerate AFM lifter wear. We use ACDelco Dexos-certified full synthetic on every GM oil change. Dexron VI transmission fluid for 6L80/8L90 automatics, and GM recommends Dexos2 for the 2.7L turbocharged Silverado four-cylinder. We carry all GM-spec fluids on every truck.
Equinox 1.5T and Malibu 1.5T/2.0T owners: oil consumption monitoring is critical on the 1.5L turbocharged engine — some early builds consumed 1 quart per 3,000 miles under normal driving. Check oil level monthly and maintain 5W-30 Dexos specification. The turbo wastegate actuator on the 2.0T is a known weak point (P0045/P0046 codes, overboost/underboost conditions). We diagnose actuator function with a bi-directional scanner before recommending replacement.
