The "100,000-mile iridium plug" is a manufacturer's best-case interval — flat Texas highways at moderate load. San Antonio driving is harder: sustained high-speed freeway idling in traffic, extreme underhood heat, and the long commutes on US-281 and Loop 1604 that keep engines working hard for 30–45 minutes at a time. We see iridium plug fouling on vehicles with 60,000–70,000 miles regularly, especially on Toyota V6 engines, Honda 1.5T turbos, and Ford EcoBoost 3.5T motors that run hot under sustained load.
The reliable indicators: a stored P030X misfire code, a rough idle that wasn't there 6 months ago, hesitation on acceleration, or a fuel economy drop of 2+ mpg. Any of these mean it's time to inspect. If you can't remember the last plug change and the vehicle has 60,000+ miles, it's time.
A misfiring cylinder (P0301–P0308) can be caused by a worn plug, a weak coil, a bad injector, or a compression issue. The fastest diagnostic: swap the coil from the misfiring cylinder to an adjacent one and clear the code. If the misfire follows the coil, the coil has failed. If the misfire stays on the same cylinder, the plug or injector is the cause. Danny does this swap at your location before recommending any parts — you don't pay for a coil if the plug was the problem.
The Toyota Camry V6, Honda Accord V6, Nissan Maxima, and Hyundai/Kia 3.3T and 3.5L engines all mount the engine transversely, pushing three of the six spark plugs against the firewall. Access requires removing the intake manifold on some models — a 2–3 hour job that shops often refuse to do in a driveway. We confirm your specific vehicle's rear-bank access at booking and come prepared with the correct tools if manifold removal is required. No surprises on arrival.
Spark plug replacement starts at $149 for a 4-cylinder engine with standard plug access. Six-cylinder engines start at $229. Engines requiring intake manifold removal start at $349. Ignition coil replacement (if needed, per coil) adds $80–$120 depending on the vehicle. We torque every plug to spec — under-torquing causes plugs to blow out under compression, over-torquing cracks the ceramic insulator. Both failures we've seen at other shops.
A dealer charges $250–$500 for a standard 4-cylinder tune-up. Engines with difficult access are quoted at $600–$900 at a dealership. We do the same work at your driveway for significantly less — and we'll show you the misfire counter data before and after to confirm all cylinders are firing evenly.
Toyota Camry (4-cylinder and V6), Honda Accord and Civic (1.5T and 2.0T), Ford F-150 EcoBoost (2.7T and 3.5T), Chevy Silverado (5.3L and 6.2L), Toyota Tacoma and Tundra (4-cylinder and V6), Nissan Altima and Sentra, Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe, Jeep Grand Cherokee (V6 and V8), RAM 1500 (5.7L Hemi), and all import and domestic makes from 1996 and newer.
Lexus SPECIFICS
Lexus vehicles share Toyota's mechanical platform and parts ecosystem, which means exceptional OEM parts availability at reasonable prices — when you go outside the dealership. The same Denso ignition coils, NGK iridium plugs, Aisin water pumps, and Toyoda Gosei hoses that Lexus installs at the factory are available to us at tier-one supplier pricing, not the 40–60% dealership parts markup. We perform Lexus maintenance using Toyota Genuine or OEM-equivalent components at your San Antonio location.
IS 250/350, ES 350, and RX 350 owners: the most frequent service calls involve V6 3.5L spark plug replacement (six plugs, inaccessible rear bank requires intake manifold removal on IS/GS models — most shops quote $500–$700 for this; we complete it at your location for less), transmission fluid service (Lexus ATF WS specification, incompatible with generic Dexron III — wrong fluid causes shift hesitation), and brake fluid flush (Lexus recommends every 30,000 miles or 3 years). GX and LX 4WD owners: transfer case and differential fluid service every 30,000 miles is manufacturer-recommended and frequently skipped.
Lexus dealership service in San Antonio (Cavender Lexus) runs $180–$220/hour for labor. A spark plug replacement on an RX 350 is quoted at $550–$700 for a two-hour job. We do it at your home, same OEM-spec plugs, typically $280–$380 depending on access. 12-month/12,000-mile warranty included.
