What Pre-Purchase Car Inspection Actually Involves

This is not guesswork repair. Your vehicle gets a data-driven diagnostic workflow before, during, and after every service.

  1. Check 01

Full OBD2 scan of all modules — engine, transmission, ABS, and airbag — to surface hidden fault codes the seller may have cleared

  2. Check 02

Physical inspection: frame, underbody, CV boots, brake condition, fluid color, tire wear patterns, and paint overspray (accident indicator)

  3. Check 03

Compression test available on request for high-mileage engines — catches worn rings before you sign anything

How Much Does a Pre-Buy Car Inspection Cost?

$150 flat in San Antonio, done at the seller's location. That covers the 60–90 minute inspection, a scan of every computer module, and a written PDF report with photos. A compression test for high-mileage engines is $50 extra, and there is no travel fee within 35 miles of central San Antonio. If the report flags something you want fixed, call or text for a repair quote.

Why a Pre-Purchase Inspection Pays for Itself in San Antonio

San Antonio's used car market is large and active — USAA employees rotating out, military families PCS-ing from Randolph and Fort Sam Houston, and a steady supply of private sellers across Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. It also means a steady supply of vehicles that have been driven hard on IH-35 and 281, deferred maintenance because of the cost of living squeeze, or flood-damaged vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 flooding events that come back to market with cleaned titles. A $150 inspection fee is cheap insurance against a $3,000 surprise.

What the Inspection Covers — No Checklist Left Unchecked

Danny meets you at the seller's location — private driveway, dealer lot, or parking lot — and spends 60–90 minutes on the vehicle. He scans all computer modules (engine, transmission, ABS, SRS airbag, TPMS) for stored and pending fault codes. A seller who recently cleared codes to pass a parts-store scan will show pending codes within one drive cycle — we catch those. He inspects the underbody for rust, frame damage, and signs of prior accident repair. Paint overspray on door jambs, mismatched panel gaps, and undercoating over welds are all accident indicators that CarFax won't catch.

Fluid condition tells a story: dark brown, gritty transmission fluid in a "well-maintained" vehicle means the transmission has been neglected for 60,000+ miles. Milky coolant means a head gasket leak. Sludged oil means infrequent changes. These are negotiating points — or walk-away signals.

The Scan Every Seller Hopes You Skip

Most buyers never scan the airbag module. A deployed airbag that was "repaired" cheaply often leaves the SRS light disabled — the sensor is present but the airbag canister behind the steering wheel is empty or stuffed with foam. We scan the SRS module and pull live data to confirm the airbag system is functional. We've found this condition on San Antonio Craigslist vehicles more than once.

Negotiating With the Report

Every inspection ends with a written digital report with photos. If we find a leaking CV boot ($200 repair), worn front brakes ($199 per axle), and a P0128 thermostat code ($150 repair), that's $550 in documented deferred maintenance. You show the seller the report and negotiate $500–$700 off the asking price — or you walk away knowing why. The $150 inspection fee becomes leverage worth multiples of its cost.

What's in Your Inspection Report

You get the written report on your phone before we leave the seller's location. It covers:

  • Every stored and pending trouble code from the engine, transmission, ABS, airbag (SRS), and TPMS modules, with what each one means.
  • Findings by system: engine and drivetrain, brakes and suspension, tires, electrical, underbody, and body condition.
  • Photos of leaks, worn parts, rust, and any signs of accident repair.
  • A repair quote on request for anything flagged: call or text and we'll price the fix.

That report is your negotiating document. Sellers take written estimates seriously.

Will It Pass the Bexar County Emissions Test?

Starting November 1, 2026, gasoline cars and trucks registered in Bexar County have to pass an annual emissions test before the registration can be renewed. A car that can't pass becomes your problem the day you buy it. During every inspection we read the OBD2 emissions readiness monitors and check for emissions-related codes, so you know before you pay whether the car is ready to pass. Our Bexar County emissions test guide explains how the new test works.

Used Car Inspection Pricing in San Antonio

Flat rate: $150 — covers the full inspection and a written digital report with photos. No add-on charges. A compression test (for high-mileage engines over 150K miles) is available for an additional $50 and is worth it on any vehicle you're seriously considering. We travel to any location in the greater San Antonio area with no travel fee within 35 miles of central San Antonio.

Doing your own homework first? Start with our used car inspection checklist, including what a VIN check or Carfax can and can't tell you. We also serve North Central San Antonio near the airport and USAA — see the North Central pre-purchase inspection page for that area's details.

Yes. We meet you wherever the car is located in the greater San Antonio area. Private driveways, dealer lots, and parking lots all work. The seller just needs to agree to a third-party inspection, which any honest seller will.

We check all fluid levels and condition, scan all computer modules for stored codes, inspect the brakes, tires, suspension, exhaust, CV axles, belts, hoses, and look for signs of accidents or rust under the vehicle.

Walk away. A seller who refuses an independent inspection is hiding something. Any legitimate private seller or dealer should welcome an inspection — it protects both parties.

Yes. You receive a full digital report with photos and our findings before you leave. This is useful for negotiating price if we find issues, or as peace of mind if the vehicle checks out clean.

$150 flat. That covers the full inspection at the seller's location, a scan of every computer module, and a written report with photos, plus a repair quote on anything flagged if you call or text. A compression test for high-mileage engines is $50 extra. There is no travel fee within 35 miles of central San Antonio.

No. A history report only shows what was reported: insurance claims, title brands, and odometer readings. It cannot see accident damage that was repaired for cash, trouble codes cleared before the sale, or parts that are worn out today. Run the VIN check first, then have the car inspected.

We check. Every inspection includes a read of the OBD2 emissions readiness monitors and any emissions-related codes, which is what the Bexar County test (required from November 1, 2026) looks at. If the monitors are not ready or the check engine light is on, the report says so before you buy.

Yes — domestic, import, and luxury vehicles. Our scanner covers all makes and models from 1996 and newer (OBD2 era). For pre-1996 vehicles, we perform a visual and mechanical inspection without computer scanning.
