San Antonio's used car market is large and active — USAA employees rotating out, military families PCS-ing from Randolph and Fort Sam Houston, and a steady supply of private sellers across Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. It also means a steady supply of vehicles that have been driven hard on IH-35 and 281, deferred maintenance because of the cost of living squeeze, or flood-damaged vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 flooding events that come back to market with cleaned titles. A $125 inspection fee is cheap insurance against a $3,000 surprise.
Danny meets you at the seller's location — private driveway, dealer lot, or parking lot — and spends 60–90 minutes on the vehicle. He scans all computer modules (engine, transmission, ABS, SRS airbag, TPMS) for stored and pending fault codes. A seller who recently cleared codes to pass a parts-store scan will show pending codes within one drive cycle — we catch those. He inspects the underbody for rust, frame damage, and signs of prior accident repair. Paint overspray on door jambs, mismatched panel gaps, and undercoating over welds are all accident indicators that CarFax won't catch.
Fluid condition tells a story: dark brown, gritty transmission fluid in a "well-maintained" vehicle means the transmission has been neglected for 60,000+ miles. Milky coolant means a head gasket leak. Sludged oil means infrequent changes. These are negotiating points — or walk-away signals.
Most buyers never scan the airbag module. A deployed airbag that was "repaired" cheaply often leaves the SRS light disabled — the sensor is present but the airbag canister behind the steering wheel is empty or stuffed with foam. We scan the SRS module and pull live data to confirm the airbag system is functional. We've found this condition on San Antonio Craigslist vehicles more than once.
Every inspection ends with a written digital report with photos. If we find a leaking CV boot ($200 repair), worn front brakes ($199 per axle), and a P0128 thermostat code ($150 repair), that's $550 in documented deferred maintenance. You show the seller the report and negotiate $500–$700 off the asking price — or you walk away knowing why. The $125 inspection fee becomes leverage worth multiples of its cost.
Flat rate: $125 — covers the full inspection and a written digital report with photos. No add-on charges. A compression test (for high-mileage engines over 150K miles) is available for an additional $50 and is worth it on any vehicle you're seriously considering. We travel to any location in the greater San Antonio area with no travel fee within 35 miles of central San Antonio.
Hyundai SPECIFICS
Hyundai has been one of the fastest-improving automotive brands over the past decade — newer Hyundai vehicles (2020+) have substantially better build quality and reliability than models from 2012–2018. The critical exception is the Theta II GDI and Nu GDI engine group (Sonata, Santa Fe, Tucson 2011–2019 with 2.0T and 2.4L engines) — these engines have well-documented connecting rod bearing failures and were the subject of multiple NHTSA investigations and class-action settlements. If you own one of these models and hear a knock, check oil level immediately and call us — driving on low oil accelerates catastrophic failure.
Hyundai Venue, Accent, and Elantra with IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission, Hyundai's CVT) require CVT fluid changes every 40,000 miles — Hyundai doesn't list this in the owner's manual (they call it "lifetime"), but dealer service advisors recommend it. Tucson and Sonata with 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch automatic): shudder at low speed on 2016–2019 models is a known TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) issue — Hyundai extended the DCT warranty to 10 years/100,000 miles for affected models. We document DCT shudder complaints for warranty escalation.
Hyundai's 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is among the strongest in the industry. We work within that coverage: we don't attempt warranty repairs (those must go to Hyundai), but we diagnose, document, and advise on what's covered versus what's maintenance-only. All maintenance we perform uses Hyundai/Kia-specified oil viscosity (5W-20 or 0W-20 depending on engine year) and OEM-tier filters.
