Nissan SPECIFICS
Nissan's CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) is the most important maintenance item for Altima, Sentra, Rogue, Murano, and Pathfinder owners. Nissan's official CVT fluid change interval of "lifetime" is wrong — CVT fluid degrades under heat and driving stress, and fluid breakdown is the primary cause of CVT failure (a $3,500–$5,000+ repair or $1,800–$2,500 remanufactured replacement). We recommend CVT fluid changes every 30,000–40,000 miles using only Nissan NS-3 CVT Fluid — substitutes cause shudder and premature wear. San Antonio's heat makes this more critical, not less.
Altima 2.5L: timing chain tensioner noise on 2013–2018 models (characteristic rattle on cold start), oil consumption on 2.5L QR25DE engines pre-2019. Maxima and 370Z 3.7L VQ37VHR: spark plugs at 105,000 miles (V6 rear bank requires intake manifold removal — we handle this correctly). Frontier and Xterra 4.0L V6: timing chain service and radiator replacement (plastic radiator end tanks crack and contaminate the automatic transmission cooler built into the radiator — if your coolant is brown and your trans is slipping, this is likely the cause). Pathfinder and QX60 3.5L: CVT shudder on 2013–2015 models was the subject of a Nissan technical service bulletin (TSB) — we can document for Nissan extended warranty claims.
Altima and Sentra sedans are some of the most common commuter cars in San Antonio, and many of them come to us with high miles and little maintenance history. Rogue and Murano owners usually call about noises, warning lights, or a car that feels different on the highway. Frontier and Titan pickups see a lot of towing and heat, which is hard on cooling systems and brakes.
Because so many Nissans on the road here were bought used, we often start by figuring out what has and has not been done. A first visit usually includes a look at the fluids, belts, battery, and brakes, so you know where the car stands before you spend money on it.
Heat is the other big factor. Nissan CVTs run hotter in July stop-and-go traffic on I-35 and Loop 410, and a CVT that has never had its fluid changed is the one most likely to start shuddering. If you do not know when the fluid was last changed, assume it has not been. On Frontier and Titan pickups we also check the radiator end tanks for leaks, a common weak point as these trucks age.
A used Altima, Rogue, or Pathfinder can be a good buy or an expensive one, and the difference is usually the transmission. Before you buy, have a mechanic check the CVT for shudder, slipping, and stored codes, and look at the fluid condition. That single check tells you more than a vehicle history report.
